Power Platform Certification Roadmap 2026: Which One to Choose?

Microsoft Power Platform Certification Roadmap 2026: Which Certification Should You Choose?

Microsoft Power Platform certifications have changed significantly in 2026.

New certifications focused on AI, Copilot and AI agents have been introduced, while several older Power Platform certifications have retired.

If you’re planning a career in Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, Power BI, Copilot or AI agents, it can be difficult to know where to start.

This guide explains the Microsoft Power Platform Certification Roadmap 2026 and helps you choose the certification that best matches your career goal.

Important: A recommended learning path is not the same as a formal prerequisite. In the current roadmap, AB-100 is the certification with a formal prerequisite. PL-900 is recommended for beginners, but it is not mandatory before most other certifications.

Level 1: Fundamentals

If you’re new to the Microsoft ecosystem, the Fundamentals level is the best place to build your foundation.PL-900 — Power Platform Fundamentals : PL-900 is the most obvious starting point for someone new to Power Platform. It introduces the business value and capabilities of:
  • Power Apps
  • Power Automate
  • Dataverse
  • Power Pages
  • Connectors
  • AI-powered Power Platform features
  • Copilot Studio
  • Basic environment management and governance
There is no formal prerequisite for PL-900. If you don’t have Power Platform experience and want to understand how the different services fit together, PL-900 is a good starting point.AB-900 — Copilot and Agent Administration FundamentalsAB-900 is an optional foundation focused more on Microsoft 365, Copilot and agent administration. It covers areas such as:
  • Microsoft 365 services
  • Users and groups
  • Security and identity
  • Access management
  • Data protection
  • Governance
  • Copilot
  • AI agent administration
AB-900 is particularly relevant if your role is closer to Microsoft 365 administration and Copilot management.

Level 2: Choose Your Career Path

After building your foundation, don’t simply take certifications one after another. Instead, decide what type of professional you want to become. There are three main directions:
Career goalCertification
Power Platform developmentPL-400 / AB-410 / AB-620
Data & analyticsPL-300
Business & AI leadershipAB-730 / AB-731
This is important because PL-400, AB-410 and AB-620 are parallel specialization options, not certifications that every Power Platform professional needs to complete.

Power Platform Development Path

If you want to build applications, automate processes, work with Dataverse or develop AI-powered solutions, there are three important options.PL-400 — Power Platform Developer AssociatePL-400 is designed for professional Power Platform developers. It goes beyond basic low-code development and expects knowledge of areas such as:
  • Power Apps
  • Power Automate
  • Dataverse
  • JavaScript
  • TypeScript
  • C#
  • JSON
  • HTML
  • REST APIs
  • Visual Studio
  • Azure
  • Security
  • Authentication
  • ALM
Choose PL-400 if you want to build a career as a professional or pro-code Power Platform developer.AB-410 — Intelligent Applications Builder AssociateAB-410 is one of the newer AI-focused certifications. It is designed for professionals building AI-infused business applications using technologies such as:
  • Power Apps
  • Power Automate
  • Power Pages
  • Dataverse
  • Copilot
  • Copilot Studio
  • Power Fx
  • AI models and prompts
  • Solutions and application lifecycle
This is a particularly interesting option if you are a functional consultant, app builder or citizen developer who wants to move into AI-powered business applications.AB-620 — AI Agent Builder AssociateIf your goal is specifically to build AI agents, AB-620 is the more focused option. The certification covers technologies and concepts such as:
  • Copilot Studio
  • Dataverse
  • Power Fx
  • Microsoft Foundry
  • Generative AI
  • RAG
  • Model Context Protocol
  • Agent2Agent
  • Prompt engineering
  • REST APIs
  • AI agent configuration
AB-620 is aimed at professionals building production-grade AI agent solutions.

Data & Analytics Path

If your primary interest is data analysis rather than application development, look at:PL-300 — Power BI Data Analyst AssociatePL-300 focuses on the skills required to work as a Power BI Data Analyst. Key areas include:
  • Power Query
  • Data preparation
  • Data modeling
  • DAX
  • Reports and dashboards
  • Data storytelling
  • Power BI security
  • Workspaces
  • Row-level security
The recommended progression is:PL-900 → PL-300.However, PL-900 is a recommended starting point, not a formal prerequisite. Choose PL-300 if your career goal is: “I want to become a Power BI Data Analyst.”

Business & AI Leadership Path

Not everyone working with Microsoft technology needs to become a developer. The 2026 roadmap also includes certifications for professionals who want to use AI or lead AI transformation without writing code. The two key certifications are:
  • AB-730 — AI Business Professional
  • AB-731 — AI Transformation Leader
AB-730 — AI Business ProfessionalAB-730 is aimed at business users and administrators who want to use generative AI and Microsoft 365 tools more effectively. No coding or application development skills are required. Choose AB-730 if your goal is: “I want to use AI effectively in my business role.”AB-731 — AI Transformation LeaderAB-731 is designed for business leaders involved in AI adoption and transformation. The focus includes:
  • Identifying AI opportunities
  • Evaluating AI tools
  • Planning AI adoption
  • Improving business processes
  • Driving innovation
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot
  • Microsoft Foundry
  • Responsible AI
  • Change management
Choose AB-731 if your role is focused on leading AI transformation rather than building the technology yourself.

Level 3: Expert / Architect

At the top of the roadmap is:AB-100 — Agentic AI Business Solutions ArchitectAB-100 is an Expert-level certification for Solutions Architects. It focuses on designing AI-powered business solutions involving:
  • Generative AI
  • Microsoft Foundry
  • Agentic AI
  • Multi-agent solutions
  • Dynamics 365
  • Power Platform
  • Copilot Studio
  • Security
  • Scalability
  • Responsible AI
  • Agent2Agent
  • Model Context Protocol
  • Monitoring and ROI
AB-100 Certification by CoyLixAB-100 has a formal prerequisiteThis is the most important prerequisite in the roadmap. Microsoft requires you to hold a qualifying Associate certification before the AB-100 certification can be awarded. The qualifying list includes certifications such as PL-400, AB-410 and AB-620, along with several Dynamics 365 and Azure AI certifications. One important point:AB-730 and AB-731 do not qualify as prerequisites for AB-100.Because Microsoft can update the qualifying list, check the current AB-100 certification page before planning your path.

What Happened to the Older Power Platform Certifications?

Several familiar Power Platform certifications have now retired.
CertificationStatus
PL-100Retired June 28, 2024
PL-500Retired June 30, 2026
PL-600Retired June 30, 2026
PL-200Retired August 31, 2026
PL-200 has now retired, and Microsoft identified AB-410 as its replacement. PL-500 and PL-600 have also retired. Although AB-100 is part of Microsoft’s broader move toward AI and agentic solutions, it should not be described as a direct replacement for either certification because its scope is much broader and more AI-focused.If you already earned one of these certifications, retirement does not erase it from your Microsoft Learn transcript. Retirement mainly affects new candidates and renewal.

Microsoft Certification Exam Basics

A few general exam rules are useful to know.Passing scoreMicrosoft certification exams generally use a scaled score, with a passing score of 700 out of 1000. This does not mean that you simply need to answer 70% of questions correctly.RetakesThe current policy includes:
  • 24-hour waiting period after the first failed attempt
  • 14-day waiting period between subsequent attempts
  • Maximum of five attempts within a 12-month period
Retakes normally require another exam fee unless a qualifying offer includes a free retake.RenewalAssociate and Expert certifications generally expire after 12 months and can be renewed through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.Fundamentals certifications such as PL-900 and AB-900 do not expire.

Final Thoughts

The Microsoft Power Platform certification landscape is changing quickly. The focus is moving beyond traditional low-code development toward AI-powered applications, Copilot, AI agents and agentic business solutions.
  • If you’re new to Power Platform, start with PL-900.
  • If you want to become a professional developer, consider PL-400.
  • If you want to build AI-powered business applications, look at AB-410.
  • If AI agents are your focus, consider AB-620.
  • For Power BI, choose PL-300.
  • For business-focused AI skills, look at AB-730 or AB-731.
  • And if your long-term goal is AI solutions architecture, work toward a qualifying Associate certification and then AB-100.
Most importantly, don’t try to collect every certification.Choose the certification that takes you closer to the job you actually want.Your certification should follow your career goal — not the other way around.
